  I had the same problem, and the same symptoms. I had to replace the heating core because because it turned out the water pump was not circulating the water. So I had to replace that too. Also had to replace the timing belt and thermostat and get a coolant flush. Cost about $972

I have been working with (and driving) a first generation Mitsubishi Eclipse for several years. Anything that could go wrong with an Eclipse has probably happened on mine. Fortunately, I have gained a lot of knowledge from experience in repairing these problems myself.
