AboutFrank Edgcombe Expertise I CAN NOT DIAGNOSE equipment problems or ESTIMATE DOLLAR VALUES of your equipment, by email. I have been active in model railroading for forty years. I can answer, or find answers, to questions on most aspects of model trains, railroad equipment or buildings. I have a good knowledge of prototype railroads. I have been employed by five model railroad equipment manufacturers/suppliers and worked for a prototype railroad. I have served, twice, as the president of a local model railroad club. I have been employed as a Reference Librarian, at a university, for the last fifteen years and am used to tracking down resources for patrons.
Question Hello, I have a collection of parts that beg for completion. The shell is a Varney GG 1 unpainted, the chassie is a all metal cast/ brass assembly with drive shafts over the six wheeled trucks with nylon cog wheels attached to the shaft. The support of the upper shell is brass . The quality of this chassie is great. I looked over Bowser's parts list which identified a Penn Line GG 1 but the drive isn't right any suggections where I could find Varney motors with messing gears to complete this beauty> Thank you for your reply. David
Answer Hi! David. Thank you for your question. No I'm sorry as far as I know Bowser took over the Varney and Penn Line lines. Your's GG1 maybe have been an earlier Varney model, or Bowser might have changed their parts in order to be cheaper. Or standardize it with other chassis parts. I have heard a rumor that these older models might be dropped by Bowser too. Probably because the molds and other tools are getting very old. Your only hope to find these components is to go to train shows with the hope that a dealer might have parts or to keep searching eBay for the parts. Probably the motors were Pittman motors, but I doubt if they are made any longer. One place to look is North West Short Line. Here is a link. http://www.nwsl.com/
Hope this helps. Frank.
