Models - paint finish

Expert: Clifford Bossie - 6/26/2009

Question
I am building the USS Constitution wood boat model.  The paint I was given has a flat finish.  I believe the real thing has a semi or gloss finsh on the hull.  Is flat appropriate for the model?

Answer
Dan,

Looking through my slides of the USS Constitution the paint used in the latest restoration has a gloss finish.  However, after some time at sea and under the sun I imagine it would take on a more flat finish.  Also on a model too glossy of a finish just does not look "right".  That being said you are correct in the paint being gloss.
