Monitor Problems - problems using Samsung LCD as monitor with Dell Lattitude laptop

Expert: Chris Morrison - 1/5/2008

Question
I am trying to connect a Dell Lattitude D830 laptop to a 26" Samsung LCD (model LN-S2641D) so I can use the Samsung solely as my monitor.  Despite HOURS of efforts, I cannot get the two of them to work together.  I understand the Fn+F8 to toggle the controls on the laptop, but cannot get the Samsung to display anything.  I really rely on this great board for trouble shooting, and would sincerely appreciate any ideas you may have.  Thank you and kind regards.
Alan

Answer
Hopefully the laptop has a DVI output that you are using the HDMI cable with. If the tv and laptop have a VGA connection you can use that also.
You must identify the TV in the video card software. You can accesss the software through the control panel. there should be several settings for your monitor, and there is a setting to have your card identify the TV and test it. You won't get any out put to the TV till the card know what it is and what you want to do. Once the TV is identified you can choose to clone your desktop or just send specific applications to it - such as the DVD.
I hope this helps - if not let me know
