Monitor Problems - cant connect tv to laptop

Expert: Chris Morrison - 6/27/2008

Question
I have a hp dv2225nr laptop connected via VGA 15pin cable to a LCD HDTV. Worked perfect until recently. Now, on startup, after initial WinXP load screen, the picture goes blank and then TV says no signal or not supported and stays that way until I unplug the vga cable from the laptop then my screen will come back on. I cant change any settings on my laptop to connect to the tv because when it is pluged in my laptop is blank. My laptop uses NVIDIA. I really need help. Thank you.

Answer
First go to HP's and install the newest video drivers.

Then reboot the system and go to the control panel. There should be an applet there for Nvidia. Plug the TV into the laptop (do not boot this way. plug it in after windows is loaded.)
Choose the advanced option. click on display. Click on change display configuration under multiple monitors. Make sure the setting for multiple monitors is set. Make sure both the laptop diaplay and the TV are shown. I don't have a scond diaplay set up so the rest is from memory. There should be a setting for how the monitors perform. You'll want them to clone. That way you have display on the monitor and the TV.
If you go back to the beginning of the applet - you can choose video and tv. You can fine tune your tv connection there.
Lastly you want to go to control panel and go into the power options applet. You'll want to change what the laptop does when you close the lid. XP - this is under advanced. Vista it should just be on the left.
You want to change it to do nothing when you close the lid. That way you can boot up, use the TV and just close your laptop lid so it does not get annoying.
Be aware that on some video cards if you connect the TV at boot it will default to that. Try booting with the TV connected and try connecting it after boot. See what works best for you.

that should get you going
