Monitor Problems - HP laptop used with an external monitor

Expert: Chris Morrison - 7/31/2008

Question
I've been using my 1.5 yr old HP laptop (Vista) with an external monitor for over a year. All of a sudden, the external monitor is really washed out looking. If I look at digital photos or browse the web and look at the laptop screen, it looks fine. But when the laptop is hooked up to any external monitor, it's really washed out looking and makes the pictures look terrible and makes browsing the web really hard.  Thanks for any help.

Answer
First thing you want to do is run cleanup

Say no to demo mode

Then run disk defragmenter on your hard drive
reboot
go to HP's website and download the newest video drivers for your laptop
reboot
Reset the monitor by using the buttons on the front to enter the menu and choose the factory default or reset
check function
Let me know how it goes and we can proceed.
