Monitor Problems - have to turn monitor on/off 3 times to get it working

Expert: Chris Morrison - 7/22/2008

Question
QUESTION: My Viewsonic LCD monitor has developed a problem where when I initially turn the computer the monitor turns on for a few seconds then the screen goes black (but power light is still on). When I turn the monitor off and then on it works for another couple of seconds. I have to repeat this off/on thing about 4 times before the problem resolves itself. Also when the screen goes black I can still (very) vaguely see the whats on the screen, but its very very dark.

thsnks in advance for any help

ANSWER: Get some canned air - 2 cans
unplug the monitor and computer.
Use canned air to blow out all the vent holes of the monitor.
Leave it unplugged for about 1 day.
Open the computer case. Use the canned air to blow out the computer. pay special attention to fans and the power supply - actuall blow the air through the power supply vents on both sides.
If you have an add on video card (not on the motherboard), remove the screw at the back of the case, and remove the video card. Reinsert the card and make sure it is tight. replace the screw.
After the day is up plug the monitor back in and use the buttons on the front to enter the monitor menu. Choose to reset or factory settings.
Hook it back up to the computer and boot the computer.
If the problem still occurs try the monitor on another computer or laptop.
If the problem goes away by hooking it up elsewhere - replace the video card.If you are not sure what type to purchase just post back model and serial of the computer.
If the problem is still there after hooking the monitor up elsewhere, seek rpelacement through warranty or purchase a new one. Check newegg.com for best prices.
Sounds like you may have a back light problem. I have a link on how to fix that rather cheaply. But alas it is at work and I won't be there till monday. If you want the tutorial link just reply and I'll get it to you. Be aware it does involve taking the monitor apart.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question.  But I think the issue maybe the backlight as the compressed air hasn't solved the issue. Could you send me the link about fixing it? I am not in a hurry as I have a laptop I can use in the mean time. Cheers, Ruwan

Answer
This project involves purchaseing a cold cathode light set up for a computer and using it in the monitor, you'll also replacing the power inverter. It takes some time but does work. I have performed it twice on 2 different monitors now and the cost is next to nothing compared to a new monitor.
