Question I was just wondering what you thought of the Expos moving. Do you think there is any chance of them staying in Montreal? Do you think they deserve to go to D.C. where they've previously failed to hold a team twice? Is there any possibility MLB would move them to Puerto Rico?
If you would give me your opinion of this situation it would be greatly appreciated. I want to get different opinions on the subject.
Thanks Alot,
Bruce
Answer Hi,
Are they destined to move? It sure looks as bleak as ever for Expo fans right now. Moving 1/4 of the home schedule to San Juan is being considered by many, including myself to be the final insult. MLB does not care about Montreal anymore, that much is certain. The reason the club will return in 2003 and perhaps 2004 is due to the RICO lawsuit launched by the former ownership group against MLB and Jeffrey Loria.
As for your other questions:
- The only way the team can stay in Montreal is if there were at the very least a local group interested in owning them and they had a government-backed stadium plan. That isn't the case now. Longshot would be if the old local owners re-gained control through the RICO suit.
- In my opinion, D.C. will only get the Expos because the highest bidder will be there. They did fail twice before, and there is no guarantee that they would be successful this time. They have also not secured public financing for any ballpark as of yet, another roadblock.
- It's highly unlikely they will end up in Puerto Rico.
