I have an '82 gs650g also. Same thing. you need a good battery. Test the reg/rectifier. If it's bad, replace it with a genuine Suzuki part. aftermarkets don't last very long. My oe part is 12 or 13 yrs old with no problems. Most parts are still available through the dealer.

Also, when the battery is weak the coils won't have enough voltage to generate a spark strong enough to overcome the resistance created in the cylinders. Outside there is no resistance, therefore a faint spark.
