Motorcycle Repair - cam chain

Expert: Rich Johnston - 12/1/2008

Question
I've had this 1982 Honda CB750k with 55,000k on it for 5 years I've put about 15,000k on it since I bought it and I was wondering how long should a cam chain last should I be changing it soon I have no idea what the last person has done. I am going to remove everything and paint the frame is this a good time to change the chain or will it last another 5 years

Answer
James, a cam chain can last a long time if the oil is changed regularly and kept in adjustment.  It will typically let you know before it's in danger of breaking. It will start making noise when the tensioner runs out of adjustment.  To replace the cam chain, it will require a complete engine disassembly.  If you intend to rebuild the engine, then absolutely replace the cam chains.

Regards
Rich
