Motorcycle Repair - Brake Light won't brighten

Expert: Wayne Samel - 5/18/2008

Question
Hi Wayne,
I am buying a 1999 Yamaha YZF-R1.  The brake light will come on as a running light but it will not brighten when you hit the breaks.  The bike has been rebuilt from a total loss.

Answer
Steve,

Check your fuses, then check if you have
power on the brown wire to the rear brake
light switch. Also check the bulbs and sockets
for corrosion. The power for the brake light
comes from the fuse box to the brake switches
and then on to the tail/brake light.

If neither the front or rear brake switch
work then it is likely a blown fuse,
broken brown wire or bad bulb/socket.

Make sure the tail/brake bulb is the type
with two filaments in it. 1157?

Good luck!
