Question
How do you trouble shot the regulator and alternator on a 1991 Fatboy it was smoking where the regulator plugs into the casing.

Answer
Your bike has a stator, not a alternator. What you do is take a OHMs meter and test the OHMs on the stator from ground to one pin and then do the other. Should be zero OHMs. Now go pin to pin and you should show OHMs. Now, start he bike and with a AC volt meter, check the voltage of the stator. Should be around 60 volts at 2000 RPMs. If the stator does not pass the test then its bad. If it does then the regulator is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
