Motorcycle Repair - cleaning a s&s carburetor

Expert: Mike Wells - 11/6/2009

Question
Hi Mike,
I have a 76 FLH with a s&s carburetor, the carb leaks about a quarter quart of gas every night, with the petcock off, and it has a tendency to sputter, even when running and warm. I am assuming the carb needs to be cleaned. Can you direct me to a step by step instructions to clean it ? I have never attempted this. many thanks in advance.
Ron

Answer
First, you need to get a rebuild kit for the carb. Also, if your carb is leaking like that, your petcock is probably leaking also, so you would need to replace it.
Remove the carb and take the bowl off and remove the jets. clean the jets and bowl. remove the pumper cover. Be careful you dont lose the balls and spring in there. replace the diaphram. Put it back together and try it out.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
