I think I've got the same problem on my 76 xl175 - at this site,

part 11 on that diagram is an o-ring, and I'm suspecting that may be what's at fault. Not sure if you need to remove the entire cover to replace it or what, but that's where I'd start.

Or make sure the lock nut (the bigger one behind the other one) is tightened - that was my problem; I tightened it and it doesn't seem to be leaking anymore. :)
