Motorcycle Repair/sportster 1200 clutch

QUESTION: I have a 1988 sporty 1200 when i bought it i rode it home anr it slipped the whole way . so i pulled it apart and the outside disk wasnt even in the basket .after i took the the clutch hub off i found it was missing a snap ring in the back. so i put it back towith new disk from drag.specialies.i soaked them first .but now it seems no matter how i adjust it. It keeps slipping when i try to give any amount of sufficient. throttle i only put in a quart of primary lube it just slips bad

ANSWER: Did you get the spring pressure plate in the correct direction?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes i believe so i got it facing out it was pretty hard to get the pressure plate its gotta be right i hope. i took it back apart latnight and noticed the arm on the ramp on the primary cover wasn't comin all the way back and i didn't have cable all the way collapsed when i put it together the first time. you think this could be the problem and i put the spring plate in flared out torwards me is that right it seemed kinda loose and easy to put on flared in

ANSWER: The spring plate,on your bike, needs to be put on with a special tool to collapse the spring plate so I am not sure how you got it on. The spring plate should have the dome part of it towards you. Then there is a clip that goes in to hold it. Do you have it this way?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: That is exactly how i have it. i didn't have the tool but i did get it on there and there was also two other washers in there one flat the other had a rib all the way around it. i put the ribbed one towards me against the spring plate then the flat one then that big circlip ring snapped in the grooves

Sounds like you have it right. Now go back and adjust the clutch. Put alot of slack in the cable first and then push the cable inward before trying to adjust it. Now adjust it at the adjuster in the primary, then adjust it at the cable. Dont get it to tight or it will slip
