I have found a static timing is best.  For the coil it is a simple device.  You take off the the points wire or make sure the points are open then ground it to make the coil spark.  If no spark you need to check the primary field.  It can be burnt so either a open no continuity or a short low continuity which not too common.  Take the spark plug out and ground it against the frame, short across the point with a screw drive but a piece of wire works better with alligator clip on it, simulating what the points do. If no spark or little spark it won't work.  Little spark primary field is collapsing or shorting inside itself resulting in a weak spark.
