does the 96 have the fuel tank still under the seat that has a fuel pump that you hear when you first turn on the key? It makes a clicking noise for about 5 sec. when clicking stops, turn off key then turn key back on. repeat this until it stops chattering. Bike should start now. what you ran into was protection that is intended to keep people from burning up their fuel pumps. you could have airlock in your fuel line.
