Subject: Want a sofa, have a 30" wide doorway

Question
Hi, my husband and are moving into a new apartment. The doorway to the house is 30" wide x 78" in height. Our apt. door is straight down the hallway at a bit of an angle on the left. That door is the same dimension. Once in the apt. there is a hallway, @30" wide that we can maneuver the sofa in to get it to the living room? How big should this sofa be? All I keep seeing are atleast 36" in depth and height. Thanks, Robyn

Answer
Hello Robyn,

A door width of 30" limits sofas to the smaller sizes. You can't put a lot of bulk through those narrow doorways. The larger the depth measurement, the lower the back height should be and vice versa. Every person's delivery is a different scenario so I have to generalize when someone asks me for dimensions to buy. A straight shot in through a 30" doorway can just about handle most sofa lengths. I would keep the depth at approx. 38" and a sofa back height of 34" or less. You can have a higher sofa back as long as you have removable legs and or back cushions. A 40" high sofa with 4" legs and back cushions that rise 4" over the sofa back and bring the sofa back height down to 32" once they are removed.

As far as your inside hallway goes, if the sofa is going to travel straight to the room, you should be ok. If the sofa will need to be stood on end, the length will need to be at least 6" less than the ceiling is high in order to stand it up. If you have a 96" high ceiling, your sofa should be less than 90" in length.

Let me know if this info helps you out with making any buying decisions.

Harry
