Subject: How tall will my mule filly grow?

Question
My mule filly is 13 months old and 13.1 hands.  Her mother is a Tennessee
Walking Horse who is 15 hands.  At her age and present height how tall would
you expect her to be when she is full grown?  Do mules have the same growth
rate on average as horses?

Answer
On the day they are born, you can measure the length of the cannon bone from the mid knee to the top of the hoof.  Zorro's cannon bone was 16.1" and he grew to 16.2 hands.  It's worked for all my mules.  The cannon bone does not grow an longer and their ears do not grow any longer from the day they are born.

Mules knees close later than a horse's and they seem to be developmentally behind horses in substance and mental maturity.  That's why we do not start our mules in hard training until they are three.

Have fun with your filly!
