About Gary Housknecht
Expertise
I can answer questions about use of Goldwave or Roxio Sound Editor. These applications can manipulate .wav and .mp3 sound files in nearly any way imaginable and can clean up unwanted noise. Convert from one sound type to another. Ask about other file types, such as .wma, etc.

Experience
Goldwave is the best affordable sound editor I have seen. I have used it and Roxio for a few years. I am not the best at answering technical questions about all the terms relative to wave forms and so forth but I generally know where to get such answers.

Music / Sound Editing - Opening large files with Roxio Sound Editor

Question
Hello!
I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and sometimes when I download them they come in very large files(some complete unabridged audiobooks come in 1 file!).  When I try to open these large audio files, one of two things happens:  Either the program will start to open the file just as it would any smaller file, but never completes it (It just sits there using massive system resources and doing nothing).  Or it will give me an error message stating: Unable to open the following file for editing:  followed by the file name and location.  I hope that you can help me with this problem and I lood forward to your reply.  Thak you very much!

                                Sincerely,

                                John A. Hale, II

Answer
You need one of two things (or both). You did not give me any system info, but I am assuming you have limited RAM (memory). When playng large audio files (especially large video files) you need enough massive memory for it to play correctly. I am guessing you have less than 512MB.

That's ok if you don't want to get more memory. Download MaxSplitter (free version) at this URL: http://www.acc.umu.se/~max/  It will split large audio and video files. I use it fairly frequently has not caused any problems. I have 784MB RAM and still need to split large video files over 3 GigaBytes so they will run smoother in my video editing process.

When you open MaxSplitter, select the file you want to split. I recommend you try splitting into only 2 parts at first try. If that doesn't work, go back to the original and split it into three parts, and so forth.

Let me know how you come out ... Gary
