Music / Sound Editing/Shure wireless dropout
Expert: Antonio Delgado - 3/7/2007
QuestionWe are using shure U1 transmitters, im not sure what model the mic's are, they're small enough to tape to the ear, UAC i think? I have been having problems with dropouts. I have switched out a few mic's and adjusted the frequency, squelch, and group settings on the transmitters, and recievers. Most problems have been solved, but it seems that the actors that are backstage, or behind large props i lose signal at moments. There doesn't appear to be dead spots on stage when it is clear of props. Do you have an opinion of these microphones, or any tips for me? I take my job seriously, and I feel I hope i am doing the best I can on my end to fix problems. Any comments?
AnswerHaving worked for Shure for many years as a service technician, I can certainly provide some advice in this area.
Without going to much into technical detail, the output power for the U1 transmitter is between 8 to 12 dbu radiated. Placing a prop between transmitter and receiver line of sight will minimize the transmitting signal at the U4 receiving end by an average of 5 to 20 dbu (at times much higher). This variation is relative to the material type and thickness of the prop. So in short, minor instances of signal reduction of this nature will create what we all know as a drop out. Having said this, it is highly recommended to maintain a clear line of sight from transmitter to receiver at all times.
Having worked in the field for so many years now, I know for a fact that at times line of sight is not possible due to the stage layout and other altercations. For this type of application, I highly recommend either a uni-directional antenna (active or passive) properly placed or an omni-directional one. Both of these types of antenna are sold by Shure. Large auditoriums, concert halls, arenas can’t do without these types of antenna, primarily because of their extended distances from receiver placement to transmitters.
