Question
How do I determine how big of an sound system amplifier I need for my monitors?

Answer
These days it is very simple to determine the proper power needed for most monitors.  Every manufacturer specifically labels monitors or speakers with the proper power need.  Labels attached to monitors or speakers note maximum and program wattage requirements.  This is your first step to keep things simple.  Bottom line, to determine how big a sound system amplifier you need is dependent on what your monitors are designed to handle.

The theory behind what monitors can handle is relevant to a few major factors:  passive or active crossover design, woofer design, horn/tweeter design, etc.  Major details in these major factors than follow…i.e. theory behind woofer’s coil and magnetic structure… just give you and idea.

Note:  To prevent monitor failure always apply the proper power…

If your monitors don’t have a printed label or spec sheet, this information can easily be received by the manufacturer.

All amplifiers specify output power on their label or data sheet.
