Question Is there any difference to my audio system between using a continuous 12 ga. speaker wire for 50 feet or less between my amp. and my speaker vs. using two shorter lengths connected together with wire nuts and then having the connection taped with electrical tape?
Answer A 12 gauge conductor for such an application is perfect.
To answer your question:
If both joining conductors are the same gauge, this will not affect performance. On the opposing side, I would highly discourage joining two shorter pieces and adjoining them with wire nuts and electric tape, due to the possibility of shorts. Such shorts for this type of application can overload the output transformers and at times burn them out. To stay on the safe side, that is if you prefer not to purchase a 50 ft speaker cable factory made speaker cable, then join two shorter lengths of 12 guage conductors and seal the exposed wire with shrink wrap. If you decide to follow this process- make sure to first shrink wrap individual joining conductors and then shrink wrap both already shrink wrapped wires for a snug look.
