Hello
I need to do some editing of some tapes i have recorded to digital but i lack the knowledge to do a good job. More specifically how to enhance the recordings to a proffessional level(i am editing them for an audio web site). I have heard terms like boost the signal and equalization for thr tone... i dont even know what these mean. My question is what is this how do i do it or how do i find out how to do it.

What you are referring to is the process of Mastering. This is where you take a recording and enhance it to produce a high quality finished product.
There are many pieces of software that can help you to do this. I use T-racks to boost levels, add EQ and compression and limiting etc. But the first thing you will need to do, if you have recorded from tape, is to reduce the noise by adding noise reduction or a noise gate of some description, this will reduce any his or background noise, leaving only the sound that you want. EQ, will change the tone of the recording, treble and bass etc. you will need to push up the mid for voices. Then finally, Compression and limiting will bring the volume of the recording up to a decent level without distortion.
