Question
Hi Rob

Thanks for any advice. I am producing a multimedia library for a non- profit org. I have a very good digital recorder to transfer the many tapes they have into digital. i wanted to know if you know of any good programs i can do my editing with(preferably free) as well as does it make any difference what tyoe of tape player i use to record the tapes from ie walkman , stereo with tape deck... How do i produce a max quality of these recordings. Thanks

josh

Answer
Hi Josh,
I am not sure as to what Free S/W you could use for your recording, but for this type of recording I use Cool Edit Pro. This has now been bought by Adobe and re-packaged as Audition.
You will probably be able to find a copy of Cool Edit somewhere on the net. Sound forge is another good one. Do a Google search for Free audio recording s/w and something should come up. Also check out www.tucows.com as they should have something.
It doesn't really matter what tape player you use, as long as the s/w you use has the ability to enhance the sounds. Then it's just a case of boosting the signal, using equalisation to get the tone right and using noise reduction to clean it up.
Hope this helps
