Music / Sound Editing - recording sound over phone and in secret

Expert: Antonio Delgado - 2/7/2007

Question
I am interested in recording dialogue heard directly over the phone, something that my answering machine already does naturally, but I'm hoping to get it directly via dv tape.  What sort of equipment would I need in order to get it.

I also would be interested in foregoing a boom mic and wiring up someone for sound.  Because I don't want the mic to be visible onscreen, what sort of equipment would I need that would be lightweight, mobile (using batteries) and could easily be hidden underneath a jacket and still record reasonably clear sound?

I appreciate your help.

Answer
The equipment for both of your applications is easy to come by these days.  When I worked for Shure incorporated in the past, I would always receive questions like these.

To answer your first question:
I recommend a USB Telephone Recorder: Uses your computer to record your phone calls.  Here is the link:  https://st82.startlogic.com/~musicevo/osCommerce/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=120&osCsid=2f050736661c38b9936bcc4906aec9ce
Another option is the following:

To answer your second question:
You can always go with the boom and mic option.  The downside to this is you are limited from moving around unless you have additional hands that will guide the mic and boom arm while you record with the camera.  If you wish to take this direction, here is a link for the proper equipment:

Shotgun Microphone:

Telescopic Boom Arm:

Keep in mind, taking this approach is professional but still costly.  You will also need a preamp to control the gain/volume going into the input of your audio/video recording device.  A preamp could range anywhere between 300 to 2000 dollars for a portable one.  I could find you one if you decide to take this approach.

For total flexibility I recommend the following for (wireless capabilities without visibility):
A portable receiver-
Matching transmitter-
and the lavalier

Many wonder what the TV stars wear for tv shoots and such.  What they wear during sit down interviews are what are know as lavalier microphones (They are also called lapels).  The lavalier is a very small condenser microphone normally the size of a raisin.  A wireless bodypack transmitter is what attaches to the lavalier to make it wireless.  A receiver is also needed to receive the signal from the wireless bodypack transmitter.  The receiver then connects to a preamp/mixer or straight into the audio input of a camera.  Keep in mind, there are various ways of returning the signal to the input of the camera.  When you decide what direction to take email me back, I will be happy to assist you-
Here is a link for a system that will do the job---
