Music / Sound Editing - short mpeg video files of songs

Expert: Rob Evans - 12/4/2005

Question
Hi Rob, I have short mpeg video files of songs on a computer running ME. Songs play perfectly but if I try to copy in any way such as drag & drop, copy and paste, burn to cd, copy directly over network to computer running XP, copy to USB stick, then the copy plays but with faults like a record or cd that jumps or skips in places. Can you help? Thanks Ralph.

Answer
Hiya,
Sorry I haven't really got an answer that is really going to help you all that much. There is obviously a process that is affecting the write processes used on you computer. This means that when you perform any complex write procedure the data gets corrupted. One question I would ask is? If you make a copy of the file, onto another area of the HDD, does that one become corrupt? This isn't really going to answer anything though, it will just reafirm that the problem is quite serious. You could try re-booting and bringing your machine up in Safe mode. Then see if you can make a copy. Although you will be limited in what you can copy on to, if you use the safe mode with networking, you should be able to copy from machine to machine. If not, I would suggest a complete re-install. If this does work, I would suggest re-boting as normal then pressing control alt and delete to bring up the task manager and removing all applications running leaving only Explorer & systray. If it works now, then another program or process is causing the problem. You can then run the program msconfig from the run command and take the ticks out of the programs in the startup area, so you are limiting what is running on your machine. One of them should be the program that is causing the issue.
See I told there wasn't really any good news.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Rob
