AboutChuck Expertise I am a professional musician, I can play by ear, I arrange music write music, teach music in the public school system, and teach privately. My father was a school music teacher, and I have written three volumes for teaching beginning string players, taking them from scratch to high school level. I have performed in a local production of Music Man (musical) with celebrities John Davidson/Susan Watson and have my masters degree in education. I retired from the classroom in 2004 with 38 yrs. experience-now still substituting for music- and writing arr. for my cello trio(with two audio cd's and one dvd of a performance)
I have directed church choirs and am principal cellist in our local community orchestra. I really love to arrange music for the groups I perform in and sing and have music in my life every day. A day without music, is a mistake, like having a day without sunshine.

Question I purchase a Cornet in 1937 and played it for over 20 years. Now, I want to give it to my Grand-Daughter, but she will need a beginner's mouthpiece. The one I have has a thick rim. When I search for Cornet mouthpieces I receive info for Trumpets. Will a beginner Trumpet mouthpiece fit my Cornet?
Answer Charles:
Cornets and Trumpets are the 'same ' instrument but the 'dimensions' are different. They play the same notes, read the same music, and the mouthpieces are interchangable. The thick rimmed mouthpiece is the basic starter mouthpiece. The ''C'' cup is the basic beginnerds mouthpiece. The'' V'' cup is the more advanced mouthpiece, and still has the same outer dimensions- only the inner 'bore' is different to make the HIGHER notes easier to make, and produce. There are various mouth pieces but the basic TWO KINDS (''V'' and '' C'' cup mouthpieces) are the mostly used ones.-
The cornet is the 'trumpet'' in a tighter and smaller format and the tone is a bit more mellow and not so brilliant as the trumpet with a bigger bell, and longer extension to the tubing. The total length of both are the same,(hence they play the same notes) but the cornet is more tightly coiled.
Many music stores rent cornets to beginners who sign up for trumpet because they 'run out '' of trumpets to rent, and have to explain to the parents that they are both Bb instruments playing the same music, only has a SMALLER , tighter format.
Thanks for the question- glad you are helping your family continue the joy of music, and starting them out playing an instrument early in life. This will also help them in school work too.
