Expert: Penny Nichols Date: 7/9/2008 Subject: jazz singing training
Question hi there!
i have been searching high and low for my question to be answered it is part of a research proposal i have shown interest in, so hopefully you can help me. i'm wanting to know what training is available for jazz vocalists, what are the key teaching methods and do they connect to the "Estill model"(created by Jo Estill)please let me knw. thank you.
Answer Hi back Akina:
I am afraid through my woeful ignorance, I do not know who Jo Estill is. There are many good Jazz programs in colleges thoughout the country, although I don't know how many of them get into scatting, which is the heart of a Jazz vocal, in my humble opinion. I believe a Jazz vocalist is first and formost a musician, who is "blowing" just like everyone else in the band. Listen to Oscar Brown sing "All Blues" or Ella, obviously, or Lambeth Hendricks and Levon or Ross, to hear some great Jazz vocals. Good luck with your research.
