Question
How long does it take different types of music, rock and classical, to influence your thought patterns?

Answer
Hello,

I can only speculate on this since I am neither a cognitive psychologist nor a neuroscientist, though as a professional musician who has been exposed to a plethora of styles of music I can expand a little on potential durations required to influence ones thought patterns.

In my own experience, I have had different points in my life where I was around certain styles of music longer than others and, generally, those styles that I am exposed to the most at those given points in time are the ones that influence my thought patterns the most (in so far as those "thought patterns" pertain to my own creativity, composing, or song-writing).

If listening to rock more often within either a short span or long span of time, then rock will influence ones musical thoughts. The same applies to classical.

I believe the degree of influence that any given style of music has on an individual is not merely determined by the duration with which they listen to that music but, instead, a combination of factors. One factor would be how intense of an impact that style had on the individual. If you listen to a classical piece or a rock song, either live or recorded, that provokes such an immense reaction from you, then you might not need much time/duration exposure to that style at all. You could also consider how you are listening to the music. Is it background music or is it receiving central and exclusive focus? Another factor could be how often you listen to it (regardless of duration each time).

There are likely several other potential factors of influence that determine not only how long it takes before different types of music influence your thought patterns but also determine how lasting of an effect that influence has on your thoughts.

Best of luck!
