Musical Composition, Theory, Songwriting, and Singing - chord transistion

Expert: D C DowDell - 5/30/2009

Question
Play keyboard at church.  Need help today if possible.  Song in key of A and will flow right into second song in B flat.  Is there an easy way to transition from A to B flat without just going into the song.  Do not need a long interlude between.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Sheri and thank you for contacting me through AllExperts.com.

There are several standard methods to transition from one key to another. To move up a half-step from A to Bb, you could just do that, or you could add a couple measures of another chord in between.

Try the 5th of Bb which is F7.

Example1: End the 1st tune in A, then play a measure of F7, then start the 2nd tune in Bb.

Or if that doesn't sound quite right, you could add the 5th of A first, then continue as I described.

Example2: End the 1st tune in A, then play a measure of E7, then a measure of F7, then start the 2nd tune in Bb.

Thanks for the interest,
