Musical Composition, Theory, Songwriting, and Singing - composition

Question
What works better in composition?Preparing the lyrics first and working out the melody? or vice versa?

Answer
Hi Bethel,

I am not very expert at songwriting, but I feel that both ways work well.

If you already have a set text, then you can compose a melody to suit it.

Alternatively, if you already have a melody in your head, then writing the lyrics would be the logical second step.

In fact, it is uncommon (but not impossible) for a musician to be talented both in writing melodies and lyrics. That is why in many songs the melody and lyrics are written by two separate people.

Thanks, and hope it helps.
