Musical Composition, Theory, Songwriting, and Singing - Developing the voice

Expert: Penny Nichols - 8/21/2009

Question
My 16 year old daughter attended her first singing lesson.  Her vocal instructor said that she had good tone and pitch but her voice is not developed yet.  What does this mean?  How does the voice become developed?  How long does it take for one's voice to become developed?

Answer
Hi Donna:

when you are 16 years old, your body is not fully developed as an adult and that includes your voice.  The vocal instructor probably was just trying to keep your daughter's voice healthy until she is old enough, 18 or so, to physiologically be ready to sing with an adult voice.  Lots of young women mimic older singers when they are young hoping to get noticed and persue a professional career, but all too often, they end up ruining their voices by pushing too hard and end up with no voice by the age of 30.  Your daughter needs to be gentle with her voice and you and she need to consider giving her body the time to catch up with her ambition.  It will happen.

Best wishes, Penny Nichols
