AboutChuck Expertise I am a professional musician, I can play by ear, I arrange music write music, teach music in the public school system, and teach privately. My father was a school music teacher, and I have written three volumes for teaching beginning string players, taking them from scratch to high school level. I have performed in a local production of Music Man (musical) with celebrities John Davidson/Susan Watson and have my masters degree in education. I retired from the classroom in 2004 with 38 yrs. experience-now still substituting for music- and writing arr. for my cello trio(with two audio cd's and one dvd of a performance)http://cellosound.blogspot.com

the church of christ uses shaped notes in their hymnals, i have sung with them
and have a hymnal of my own that has shaped notes in them, i'd first set you to find
a church of christ in your area to get some music to look at and sing wtih.
but, having said that, you need to know that the rest of the musical and singing world
does NOT use shaped notes in their music. We use regular notes. This is an
attempt to make music reading easier for the ''learning musician''. There is
also a system of teaching music by putting the NAMES OF THE NOTES in the center
of the note itself. That is found in music books for piano, accordian, and recorder
and some other beginning books. The ''shape'' of the NOTE (IN SHAPED NOTES) DOES
that also, the shape tells you the name of the note, but it is unique with only
specific systems. Try to ween your self off that and transfer your knowledge
to reading regular notation so you can buy any music from now on. Many systems
come out with ''crutches '' for a person to have while they learn the basics
but ultimately you will need to be reading ''musical notation'' .
so? check out the sources above on church of christ music, to get you started?
ok?
chuck thanks for the question- you're the first one to ask about this
and i have had expereience in this kind of music. I have even mentioned it to
the students i teach in public school of how the diff. systems are to teach music
reading. GREAT QUESTION. hope this helps./
(this might not be much help, but if you can find a ''guitar store'' check there
plus many OLD SCHOOL MUSIC TEXT books mighth have shaped notes in them, plus the
''stamp baxter'' books do, and the ''broadman books'' - and some music stores
that might have older and old fashioned text books can be checked out. ) good luck
