About Phil Kelly
Expertise
I`m a semi-retired professional music arranger with over thirty five years in all phases of the commercial music production business. I can try to answer questions regarding music arranging, theory, orchestration , and/or composition for most acoustic ensembles .( jazz band or orchestral ) I can try to offer suggestions about studio music recording procedures and some basic MIDI applications , too. In the course of my career I`ve worked with such artists as Doc Severinsen and the old Tonight Show Band, Bill Watrous, Buddy Greco, John Gary, Mel Torme, Julius LaRosa, as well as the Pop programs of the Fort Worth, Dallas, North Carolina, and Houston Symphonies, as well as library music material for ABC, ESPN, and NFL Films.

Question
I'm having trouble finding any information about typical devices, instruments, styles etc... used in pieces for things like a royal visit
the piece isn't supposed to represent a piece from any particular era but should contain elements typically used in pieces for royal visits
do you know of anything which is typically in this sort of piece, any websites that would be useful or any composers that i should research

Answer
Hi Pimms:

I suggest you investigate the works of English composers like Sir William Walton and Sir Edward Elgar. ( or others of this earlier 20th cent. period ) since both composers were often commissioned to write specific music for Royal occasions.
( Waltons "Orb and Scepter" march comes to mind. Also Elgars "Pomp and Circumstance" )

Usually , Royal occasions tended to require processional music. fanfares,
and other types of "utility" music.

I hope this helps.
