Question
hi, I am interesting in the process of writing music. What exactly inspires the artist to create nuw tunes? Can you describe the steps in composition ?

Answer
Hi Lily,

What inspires an artist?  It could be a rock, a tree, a feeling a color...your quesiton is sort of difficult to answer.  There are ways to compose, but depending on what you're writing, there are some or very many steps in any one composition.  Are you wanting to write a symphony or a pop song?   If you're familiar with music and know how to read, you may start with a line on the piano, and build from there.  I know people who don't know a thing about music and can compose wonderful pieces of music.  They know what they hear, so when you put them in front of a piano they can poke around and find what they're looking for.

If you're looking for specific instructions on how to compose a song, string quartet or other form, I might be able to help you a bit further.  Let me know.

Juanita
