Before answering the question if homosexuality was banned or not in islam, we have to agree on what homosexuality really is. Islam has banned the homosexuality's "Action". Having sentiments (love, sexual attraction...)for somebody from the same sexe has never been banned, in islam. But, having sex with that person is clearly forbidden.
