Question
Hello Dr. I have my retirement funds in a self-direct plan. This year, 1 of the 3 funds I am in took a big dip in early Dec. My brother has a similar self-directing plan and 3 of 4 of his mutual fund picks dropped 10% -12%. I heard on TV about a day in early Dec. called the "triple witching day" because of something mutual funds do on that day every year. My question is 1.What is this all about & 2. Can I avoid it by re-directing my funds to a fund that won't be affected just prior too this time of year?

Any info on this will help
Thank you,
Joe

Answer
I think this is temporary. Mostly at the end of the year, funds drop to pay out the capital gains and dividends. This would be best to re-invest the gains back into the fund, when the share prices are somewhat lower. This can be done automatically.
