Nail Care & Manicures - Gel Nails dull and yellowish

Question
I researched Gel Nails prior to having them put on and went to a number of solons asking how they did it to make sure I got "real" Gel nails.  They were beautiful for the first couple months.  Then I started going to another solon that applied them simlar to the first except that the nail technician put the gel under a lamp as if he was heating it up.  The nails looked good after he finished so I had that salon do another fill.  Now the nails are dull and slighly yellow and thicker than I like.  Was this salon using an inferior product or possible some type of acrylic?  I plan on having the nails removed and reapplied at my previous salon.  Thanks.

Answer
UV Gel is a gooey substance that, after applied to your nails, is cured under a UV lamp.

Some versions of gel ARE low quality, and can over cure, causing them to yellow, and if they are dull in appearance, it's a sign of undercuring, which puts you at risk for overexposure, and eventually a possible allergy.

They also should never be thick, it throws the weight balance of your nails off, and makes them more likely to crack and break, and also tear your natural nail underneath.

It's also important to know that ALL nail enhancements are acrylic based: Liquid and Powder, UV Gel, and Fiberglass/silk resins are all acrylic- the difference is in the set up of the product.  No one product is better, safer, or less damaging than the other.  The difference is in how high quality the product is, and how trained the tech using it is as well.
