Education/Credentials
I attended Gene Juarez Acadamy of Beauty in Federal Way, WA, and then the Gene Juarez Advanced Training Salon in Seattle. Nail Care & Manicures - gel nails

Expert: Elyse C Perry - 5/17/2008

Question
what should happen during a manicure when you are getting tips? should they
be massaging or trimming your cuticles, buffing your nails, or is it all about
putting on the tips?

Answer
Just to clarify: a manicure is a natural nail service--it does not include applying tips (unless you're having a natural nail repair done on one or two fingers).

I think you're talking about having a full set of enhancements  (acrylic, gel, or wraps) done.  In which case, cuticle work should definitely be done, including removing the cuticle that sticks to the nail plate, and nipping hangnails (no nipping of live skin, though). Massage is not a necessary step in having enhancements applied, but it's a nice add-on service. Buffing would usually occur to finish the set, to bring it to a high shine, but a gel finishing gloss can also be applied instead.

Hope this helps!
