Question Dear Heather;
I had permanent french nails (white & pink powder) put on 4 weeks ago because my nails have been shredding for the past 2 years. The nails were so soft they would literally form notches at the tip that had to be cut down as far as possible, only to reappear as the nail grew. Now, I'm not so sure I did the right thing. I like the way the powder nails look, but the 2 times I have gone back for filling I have spent over an hour, lots of money, and have also found the skin around my nails sore and bruised from the hard filing. If I remover them, will the real nails be even worse than before even though the powder was only on for a short time? What else can I do to enhance my nails??
Answer Having enhancements on is a GREAT way to preserve and protect weak, peeling nails.
What's NOT great is getting them done in a way that is painful, damaging, and overall traumatic.
If you experience the kind of pain that you described, I want you to know that it is NOT OK. Having your nails serviced should be a PAMPERING TREAT, not something to be afraid of, like seeing a dentist ;)
I can almost guarantee that your nails ARE worse than before now, but you CAN make sure they don't get any worse NOW.
It is NOT the product that causes damage. It is the TECH that works on you! Heavy handed filing techniques, and prying and peeling enhancements off, is what causes the damage that so many blame on the product itself. Liquid and Powder (AKA Acrylic) enhancements are not like some sort of acid, and do not "eat away" at your natural nails. All the rings of fire, gouges in the nailplate, and the like are a direct result of overfiling by the tech, or picking by the client.
Best thing to do is find a tech that is trained in the most up to date techniques with high quality products, to keep your nails beautiful, healthy, and pain-free.
