Nail Care & Manicures - primer reaction???

Expert: Heather Reynosa-Davis - 5/2/2008

Question
After getting artificial nails put on or after a fill, I get extreme itching around my cuticle -- this lasts for about two days.  The cuticle and skin all around the nail up to the first knuckle gets itchy and reddened.  What is this about??  Any ideas??  Thanks, Rebecca

Answer
You are having a reaction for SURE, what's UNSURE is what you are having a reaction TO.

It could be the primer, it could be the product.

What I AM sure of, is HOW this happens.  Uncured product should NEVER, EVER touch your skin.  Swiping your cuticle with a brush to get product off of them, flooding the nail with liquid, flooding the nail with primers- these are all things that happen consistently in salons by techs that just don't KNOW any better.

I urge you to get into a dermatologist to make sure you don't have an actual allergy, and if you want to continue having your nails enhanced, do thoroughly research prospective techs, and as thoroughly as you would to hire an employee for your own business.  Check their references, find out what products they are using, and research the product.  Find out what type and how much training the tech has received since beauty school.  Talk to their other clients, ask to watch them work so you can see their techniques in person.
