Nail Care & Manicures - uneven edge of nailbed

Expert: Ambercinque - 5/18/2008

Question
Hi i was hoping you could help me find out if there is a way to help get my nails back to how they should look like. The edge of my nail bed, i'm told it's called a c-curve of the nail, is extremely uneven. it's like the nail is not attached to the skin of my fingers evenly. on alot of my nails one side edge of the nail looks completely detached. there's no bleeding at all but it looks really bad and even when i get acrylic nails over them since the acrylics are clear they show through underneath. I was once told that nails get like that if you break a nail and the nail detaches from the nail bed. I don't know if that's true though. I tried looking up on the internet what might cause it and how to fix it but i don't think i'm getting the words right because i'm not getting any answers. if there is anything you can recommend or know of anyway how to fix nails like this please let me know. i can't stand looking at my nails.

Answer
Hi Kat.
This could be a disorder or a nail bacterial infection or even trauma caused your nail to do this. Its hard for me to say without seeing so I would definately ask your dermatologist or physician when in doubt.
IF this is not something that is bacterial related then I would suggest maybe a nice overlay of a colored gel to conceal the area and give you a a super shiny and beautiful look. This will help strengthen the area and really is quite durable. Good Luck
Amber
