Nail Care & Manicures - UV gels

Expert: Liza Smith - 6/24/2008

Question
Hi, I've just had UV gel nails done.  I am just wondering if there are any dangers concerned.  (ie. Is the UV skin-cancer-inducing?)

Answer
Hi Connie
This question comes up a few times.
There have been loads of tests on all professional nail products and there isnt any evidence at all that anyhing in them is cancer causing (carcenagenic)
The UV output in a gel lamp is weaker than daylight and the exposure to it is tiny compared to walking outside for a short walk.

We havent had any direction on it being harmful for people who have suffered from skin cancer for instance, but if a client had any minor concerns, they could always use a sun block on their hands when having their nails done.

There is no comparison to the UV emmitted from a sunbed for instance. Its job is to cure the gel, not to activate the melanin in your skin, which is what causes a tan, and/or ageing etc.

I hope this has put you mind at rest

Liza
