Thank you for your question, I will try to answer as easy as possible;
Currently there are three nail extension systems, Fiber Glass, Acrylic and Gel
Gel is a (jelly)substance which cures in UV light and thus forms a non porous layer on top of your nail plate. Non porous as in cannot be dissolved in any liquid. For this reason they have to be filed away when you want them removed. Quality wise no difference with acrylics but must be applied by a professional tech and with branded products such as IBD, EzFlow or ESN.
The UV light from the sun might be a time consuming way to cure it that's why the industry created UV lamps to cure in Three minutes.
Gel has a tendency to be less allergenic to people as acrylics.
I hope this helps you a but but if you need to know more and have more specific questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Greetings from BAngkok

QUESTION: do you have to have long nails to get gel nails??
Answer Hi again.
No not at all actually it depend a little on what you would like to do if you have long nails you might not wish to extend them so you will apply an overlay on the natural nail. In case you wish to extend them the form that carries the extension must touch the free edge (far end) of your nail. In case you are a nail biter it might be difficult for more reasons than just the length but that's another subject.
Greetings again and let me know how the results are if you want to.
