Experience
I am a professional nail technician with 17 years experience in the professional beauty industry. I am licensed in the states of California (license #M120766) and Colorado (license #8611.) I have been an active member of the online mailing list at Beautytech.com since 1999 where I network with 100s of nail industry professionals around the world. Over the last 15 years I have accumulated several advanced training certificates, including the coveted Creative Nail Designs Master Nail Technician status, and personal training by Tammy Taylor, Tom Bachik, and Tom Holcomb. I briefly joined the competition circuit in 2002, taking first place in the second annual Strut Your Stuff Online competition in the Enhancement 2 category. In 2009 I have decided to make time in my schedule to get back into competition by joining "Team Pink," the competition team captained by current world champion nail technician, Lynn Lammers. I boast several contributions to articles that have appeared in both Nails and Nailpro magazines, including a brief stint as a Nails Magazine Help Desk contributor and now I write a semi-weekly blog for Nails Magazine while continuing to attend tradeshows and continuing education events.

Nail Care & Manicures - LCN vs silk wrap

Expert: Maggie Franklin - 10/17/2009

Question
I currently have silk wraps on my nails and have been using these for approx. 8 years.  I soaked and get new wraps about every 4-5 months.  Lately, my nail is lifting away from the wrap at my nail tip.  I am considering LCN and not sure if this will correct the problem.  I also have a thyroid issue and thought that that may affect the natural nail as far as being more brittle. Thanks for your time.

Answer
I'm sure you've already gone through the trouble-shooting process to determine why you're experiencing problems now, after 8 years of wearing wraps, but just in case: Have you recently started seeing a new technician? Have you already asked your nail tech if she/he has changed products? Using a different brand of resin, etc?  Have you had a change in your lifestyle? Such as a new job? Or home? Or hobby? Or even new friends or significant other that means you now spend your time enjoying new activities that you didn't before? (For instance, hiking, biking, hunting, camping, cooking, etc?#

When you get a new set done, do they cut down your natural nails and apply new tips #plastic, glue-on nails) then do new wraps? Or do they just do an overlay over your natural nails without any new extensions? I find that once the natural nail is as long as the product over it, it's very easy to start getting lifting at the tip because the natural nail is more flexible than the product on top of it. This makes it easy to pull the natural nail away from the product. But-- if you've never had this problem before, then that's probably not the case all of a sudden.

Your health and consequent medications could be having an effect on the way your nails, and the products you wear on them, behave. I would definitely recommend trying the LCN. LCN is a very high quality gel product and gels tend to be more flexible than other products-- especially the resins used for wraps, which tend to get brittle. The additional adhesion and flexibility of the gel should make a noticeable difference.
