Nail Care & Manicures - removing last of artificial nails

Expert: amber Edwards - 4/26/2009

Question
Hope you can help me. I usually do not have my nails done but found I needed something for an event. I received a manicure that provided me with the natural looking artificial nails in french tip style. They were beautiful. Now, it's been approximate. a month and a half since they were done. I have been able to remove the most of them myself. I took the advice to soak my fingertips in acetone to get the base glue or what ever that is that remains on my nails. I've done this twice now and my fingers are now red and tender to touch and the stuff is still partly there. It feels like my nail beds are trying to grow over the remaining bits of the fake part here and there on my fingernails. I really don't want to go back to the salon and would thank you for any suggestions you may have for my little fix.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Patricia,

Getting acrylic nails off can be a real job! Is it your fingers that hurt or your nails? If it is your fingers you are allergic to the acetone! If it is your nails from filing the tops this is something different.
The good news is that your nails will grow out as they normally do and they wont grow over the product so don't worry about that.
The best thing to do in this case is  if your nails hurt or are tender you need to give them a little break!
Let the remaining product grow out somewhat before you attempt more removal you don't want to cause more damage.
When you soak in acetone the best thing to do is rub Vaseline on any exposed skin. Not on the nail just on the skin of your fingers up to the point the acetone will come up to.this will keep you from having a reaction to the acetone.
when removing any product use an orangewood stick not a file its a more gentle way to remove product just rub down the nail with the orangewood stick after soaking for at least 10-15 min then repeat.
I wrote an article on this subject look it up it could be a big help
