Nashville - St.Cloud Hotel

Expert: Jan Duke - 10/29/2009

Question
Where may I find a photo and information on the St.Cloud Hotel formerly on the corner of Summer and Spring streets,Nashville?

Answer
Hi David,
I don't know a whole lot about the St Cloud Hotel but from what I understand it was opened in the mid 1800's, had several owners including George Case and HT Scott, and was one of the best if not the best hotel in Nashville at the time. It was used by soldiers in the Civil War and is referenced in allot of Civil War documents.
I would check with the State Archives as I'm pretty sure that they have several pictures and written history of the property and building - the way it has looked and changed over the years. I would also look in Downtown Nashville Library...in the Nashville Room.

From what I remember the building originally had three or four floors and also seem to think that it was home to the old Cain Sloane Dept Store too.

Here is a link to the TN Archives that shows an ad listing for the Hotel in the 1857 City Directory

Hope this helps,
Jan
