Nashville - work

Expert: Jan Duke - 11/22/2006

Question
Hi Jan,
I am from NYC and I just got assigned to the 101st Airborne.
I am looking for work in a bar (I have experience) in Nashville- I am not picky... I am far from home and I am hoping to pick up some work especially this weekend as I will be doing nothing more other than hanging around the barracks and wasting time doing nothing.
Any suggetsions would be greatly appreciated!!
Sincerely
PFC Milano

Answer
Hi Matthew,
Congrats on getting assigned to Ft Campbell it's a great base with lots to do and see too.
Well, there are a ton of bars in Nashville that's for sure, but there are a few good ones in Clarksville too..I'd try Kickers (it's big)in Clarksville , first, before thinkin about driving an hour to Nashville.

Most of the good bartenders spots are filled in Nashville on the weekends thru employee longevity, so it might be hard to walk into a place and get just a weekend gig (the highest tipping times) at a good club.

You might think about becoming a bouncer too- there seems to be more of a need in that area and just not in the clubs either. Some of the larger venues like GEC and LP field hire PT and seasonal workers to work the events which is really cool cause you get to watch the events too.

Also it doesn't seem to matter much about the type of club it is either, in the past I've known a few bartenders that get better pay/tips out of local "dive bars" vs the higher end clubs and I've also heard that a few students have easily put themselves thru college by working in one of the local gay bars too.

The most conjested bar area in town is located downtown at Broadway and 2nd Ave. There are about 20-30 clubs within a 4 block area and that's where I'd go look. Some of the clubs include Wildhorse Saloon and Coyotes.

Make sure to check Ft Campbells guidelines about restricted areas when you get here too cause they do have a few which could make a difference on where you would want to work or hangout.
Good Luck,
Jan
