Question
My wife and I both believe that we have a substantial amount of Cherokee background.  I am doing extensive research as to who our Cherokee ancestors were and hopefully find out what specific tribe they belonged to.  When I do find them, what kind of “proof” do I need to show that they were indeed Cherokee Native American’s?  Also, what percentage of Native American blood do you have to have to be considered Native American by State & Government standards?  Thanks.

Ryan

Answer
Hi Ryan,
Its good to hear from you. you would need to contact the enrollment department of the tribe and present your findings, then fill out an application for enrollment. after you submit the form there is a waiting process. About a month i would say.  Most tribes go with 1/16 blood quantum. Thank you for your questions.
